Stewardship/Financial
Our Finances
St. James is financially stable. In addition to funding our operations, we have numerous dedicated funds for our varied outreach and ministry efforts. The annual budget over the last three years has been approximately $257,000/year. Approximately 70 percent of St. James income is derived from pledges and faith-giving, with another 20 percent from other, non-pledge income such as feeding ministry donations, general fund raising and building use. The final 10 percent comes from the St. James Foundation. On the expense side, about 58 percent supports salaries and benefits, approximately 17 percent covers site expenses and 16 percent is dedicated to the feeding ministry. The remaining funds cover general administration, Diocesan assessments and other ministry areas.
In addition to the normal operation of the church ministries, there is a need for major repairs to maintain our building, over 150 years old. In 2009, more than $275,000 was raised for a total rebuild of our historic Skinner Organ. In 2016, over $325,000 was raised for the renovation of our kitchen and parish hall to better service our neighbors attending our feeding ministry. (Notably, about one third of the money raised for the kitchen and parish hall came from donors in the community at large, reinforcing the vital role St. James plays in supporting the community.) In the near future, we will need to embark on another capital campaign to cover other needed major restorations.
St. James Foundation
The St. James Foundation began in 1910 with a small endowment fund. It now manages and protects an endowment of just over $1.8 million. Its purpose is to provide long-lasting endowment and support to enable St. James to fulfill its missions. The Foundation’s spending policy allows it to spend 4.5 percent of the investment value annually. The organization provides supplemental support to the operating budget as well as funding for major maintenance and capital improvements to our over 150-year-old building. The Foundation also provides support for several local outreach projects — and our flagship feeding ministry.over 150
Church Attendance
The average number of communicants has remained stable over the last three years at around 140. However, as with other churches, St. James has experienced a significant reduction to 41 average Sunday attendees during the past few years due to disruption by the COVID pandemic We have found it difficult to return to pre-pandemic Sunday attendance while in this interim period. Once we have a new Rector, we believe we have the opportunity to increase attendance.
